The Right Boat for You

How to choose the right boat?

Boats available for bareboat charter in the VI range from the mid-30 feet to over 50 feet in length. These boats are rigged and tuned for the sailing conditions in the VI.

The best way to decide on the type of boat and the size is to first decide on the charter company. They will then let you know what boats are available. Once you send in your resume, they can help you decide on the size.

It is likely that you will charter a boat that is considerably larger than you have experience sailing. That should be ok if you are a competent, consciences and safe sailor.

Larger boats are available; however, you will probably need to pay for a captain and crew.

How is the boat equipped?

Adequate linens, wash cloths and towels are provided. You may want to ask for an few extras.

It can get pretty warm down below at night. Make sure that your boat has a wind scoop. It is better to have at least two. Check them out to make sure that all of the parts are present and that it is in good shape. Only a few boats are equipped with air conditioning. If equipped, the charter company may not guarantee the operation of the A/C.

Charter boats have the basic equipment. You will find everything that you need to safely sail in the VI. Basic hand-tools, communications equipment, safety equipment, and navigation equipment are provided. If you want a GPS, you will need to take your own unit. Make sure to have all of the cool waypoints loaded prior to boarding your boat.

Some companies provide a cell phone along with the VHF. The cell phone is primarily for communications with the charter company personnel. It may be used for personal use as long as you activate it for your use and pay the usage cost.

The charter company may provide mask, fins and snorkel. It is a good idea to take your own snorkel and your own mask may be a better fit. The fins are usually adequate.

The charter company may or may not provide one ice chest. Ask to make sure. Coolers are usually available for rent in or near the marinas. Don’t rent one if you can get a loaner from the charter company for a small deposit.

The nicer charter boats are well equipped and comfortable. The better companies will have well maintained and clean boats.
